Designing a home really does take a site. It is certainly possible to work out some possible relationships between spaces, a rough budget and some ideas about style without a site. However, I'd say that unless your design is very site generic (think home builders) then you should wait to design your project after you have the site under contract.

I would add that just because you can access an attic, doesn't mean that you can store stuff in it. The bottom chord of the truss (the piece attached to the ceiling) isn't really designed to have something placed on it. The load in a truss is expected to be on the top chord (the roof). Now, you could have it engineered to act as an attic truss where there is a real floor but it is very likely to take additional material unless you are storing something very light.

The other issue is the insulation in a trussed roof. Most likely it is 12" or so deep and your bottom chord is only 3.5"-5.5". If you place either plywood or a stored item on the insulation it will likely compress it by 50-70% and you'll lose that portion of the insulation value.

Its amazing what you can do with a small amount of space those draws just add something extra to the home, and I bet that any woman would be happy with that extra space. I know that I certainly would.

His work is really stunning, thanks for sharing it with us.

I also followed the link but unfortunately the page is no there it would have been amazing to see his work, maybe you could give another link for us to see? There is nothing better than built in cabinets they just give a different look to the whole look of a room.

For me the kitchen is like the hub of the family, and its the most social place of the house as well. When I have my dream home one day I will make sure that the first room that is designed is the kitchen and that it will be for the family as well as for friends and entertainment. There has to be an island what people can sit around and be part of things when I throw dinner parties and it will be the place where the family will have breakfast together in the mornings.

I have just came across this site and its informative and interesting.
Why is it that the space under the stairs is every ones nightmare, when architects design homes why is this one space that seems to be left out? Depending on where the stairs are situated space should be incorporated some how, like making that coats closet, a book case or even making into the downstairs toilet, one can actually get quite creative with this space I think .

I think that when you are remodeling you want to be around the project as much as possible!
If you can do a lot of it yourself that helps on quality and money.
Usually the best job done is the one you do because you know how you want it done and you
want it done nicely because you’ll be seeing it everyday - the contracter wont!
Thanks for this blog it had a lot of great information!
