I’m addicted to Garden Porn

I have a new favorite blog to visit.  The title of this post comes from the heading on her blog “Garden Porn - is that a pistil in your calyx or are you just happy to see me?”. This woman is absolutely amazing. Michelle Derviss is a landscape designer from Marin County, California and [...]

Heating for Outdoor Living Spaces

There are many ways to heat your outdoor space.  One way that is especially handsome is an outdoor fireplace, particularly when it either reflects or complements the architecture of the home.
Outdoor Fireplaces for Heating
The fireplace in the photograph above nicely complements the space in which it is set.  It features a large stone boulder slab [...]

Expert Kitchen Advice from Susan Serra

So one of my recent “finds” on Twitter is Susan Serra, a Kitchen Designer in the New York area.  Sometimes there’s nothing like advice from an expert.  Architects (me included) like to think we can design kitchens without help, however as I puruse this womans blog and website I recognize expertise far beyond my own. [...]

Outdoor Living Spaces - Lighting

Now that it is almost spring here in the Northwest I’ve been thinking about gardening and our outdoor living space quite a bit. I’ve just begun to clean up my front garden, which is where we have our outdoor living space, and think about what I’d like to do to improve it for the [...]

Under Stair Storage - beautiful drawers

Here’s another idea for how to use or otherwise maximize the use of under stair space. This is particularly useful for spaces that are relatively short. I love the simple lines that reinforce the expected elements. The drawer fronts beveled to follow the stair slope reinforce the stair skirt. The continuation [...]

Built-in Cabentry - Beauty and Function

So I’m meeting with a client in Bellevue discussing the remodel of her 50’s vintage rambler and we start discussing the fireplace wall. We discuss it for about 20 minutes and the end result of the conversation looks something very much like the picture above.  This photo comes from the portfolio of local cabinet [...]

Stunningly Beautiful Sliding Glass Doors

Another spectacular find from the Seattle Home Show was HH Windows & Doors.  They make these unbelievably beautiful wood sliding doors.  I couldn’t believe how smoothly the large doors operated.   They had a 9′ door at the show and it’s operation was smooth and easy.  They credit that to their “Lift-Slide” door technology which [...]

Hide your TV - The best of the Seattle Home Show

Northwest Cabinet Designs has my favorite “cool thing” display at the Home Show. They’ve built a cabinet that can rotate the TV out of view and replace it with a piece of art. The owner tells me that they can build this as a free standing piece of furniture as shown at the [...]

Rivenworks Mosaics - Spectacular Architectural Art for the home.

Thanks to the miracle of social networking I’ve reconnected with a childhood friend who is now an artist.  Kelley Knickerbocker is a local artist who has designed some beautiful residential installations.   This kind of artwork is not just for the wealthy.  Folks with modest homes could easily economize in areas that would allow them [...]
